The everyday 1 MB limit
Online applications for jobs, exams, admissions, passports and government schemes very often say “PDF, maximum 1 MB”. Phone-scanned documents routinely exceed that, which is the most common reason uploads fail.
Why phone scans are so large
Scanning apps save each page as a high-resolution colour image, often 3000 × 4000 pixels, far more detail than a document needs. NapTools reduces those images to a sensible resolution and re-encodes them efficiently. Most of the file size disappears while the document stays readable.
A quick checklist for upload day
- Combine the required pages with Merge PDF, in the order the form asks for.
- Fix sideways pages with Rotate PDF.
- Compress here to get under 1 MB.
- Open the result once to confirm every page is readable before you submit.
Frequently asked questions
My PDF is 15 MB. Can it really get under 1 MB?
Usually yes, if it's large because of scans or photos. Ten pages of phone-scanned documents typically compress from 10–20 MB to well under 1 MB.
Is 1 MB the same as 1000 KB?
NapTools treats 1 MB as 1024 KB, which is what most upload forms mean. If a portal is very strict, choose the 500 KB page instead for a safety margin.
Can I do this on my phone?
Yes. It works in your phone's browser. Very large PDFs (over 50 MB) can be slow on older phones because everything runs on the device.
