What US photo rules check
- Taken within the last six months, in colour, showing how you look now.
- Plain white or off-white background with no shadows behind your head.
- Neutral expression, both eyes open, facing the camera straight on.
- No glasses. The US stopped accepting them in passport and visa photos in 2016.
Printing a 2 × 2 sheet
Photo shops print 4 × 6 and 5 × 7 files the same day, and phone printing apps deliver them too. Ask for the file to be printed as it is, without cropping or borderless enlargement, because that slightly enlarges the image and the photos stop being exactly 2 inches. Measure one with a ruler before you cut the rest. Need other sizes on the same paper? The main passport photo print sheet handles 35 × 45 mm and custom sizes.
Frequently asked questions
How big should my head be in a 2 × 2 photo?
US rules ask for the head, from chin to the top of the hair, to be 1 to 1 3/8 inches (25 to 35 mm), about half to two thirds of the photo height. The sheet crops from the centre, so frame your photo with your head in the middle and a little space above it.
Why only two photos on 4 × 6?
Three 2 inch photos fill the full 6 inch length with no room for a printer edge or for cutting, so a safe layout fits two. A 5 × 7 in print fits six with clean gaps, which is better value when you need more.
Can I use this for the online DS-160 visa form?
The DS-160 needs a digital file, not a print. It must be a square JPG between 600 × 600 and 1200 × 1200 pixels, 240 KB or less. Use the resize and compress tools for that, and this sheet when you need physical prints for the interview or a passport application.
